Lelooska Totem Carving Site
Over sixty years ago, Native American art collector William J. Wineberg teamed with Chief Don Lelooska to carve three totem poles for his Kalama Museum near today’s Columbia Inn. Soon after, Wineberg commissioned a 140-foot giant—once considered the world’s tallest—for his wife, Janet. A dispute halted work for 12 years until the Kalama Chamber revived it and raised it at the waterfront in 1974, where it stood solemnly before weathering led to its 2019 removal and subsequent restoration. The monumental artwork now lies horizontally inside the Mountain Timber Market. The Lelooska Foundation carefully restored this cultural treasure to preserve its legacy, along with four other Lelooska poles at Marine Park.
