Kalama Early Baseball Field

As pioneers ventured westward, they took with them an essential element of their culture: baseball. In the early 1900s, Kalama had its first integrated baseball team that, despite its modest size, became known as the “Kalama Nine.” This team played together for several years, fostering a sense of community and camaraderie among its members. The original baseball field, strategically situated in the heart of downtown Kalama, was easily accessible, allowing residents to engage in America’s beloved pastime. However, in 1923, the field faced an unfortunate fate when a devastating fire swept through downtown, destroying numerous buildings, including the baseball field. A remarkable group photograph from this era showcases the Kalama Nine, proudly dressed in wool uniforms adorned with a prominent “K,” seated alongside well-dressed spectators. Admission to the games was reasonably priced at 25 cents, attracting a substantial audience eager to support their local team.
