Trashcan Mural Project: Julia Sturgeon

Artist Profile:

I was born and raised in the rainshadow of the Olympic Mountains; I spent my childhood hiking, surfing, and swimming all around the Olympic Peninsula. I’ll never forget waiting in the pouring rain outside the downtown Port Angeles theater for the midnight premiere of Twilight, eating the mushroom ravioli that the owner of Bella Italia brought out for everyone. Little did I know that years later, I’d be picking up my own kids from the very high school I watched on that screen. Kalama has been our home for the past ten years, and painting this piece felt like the perfect way to bridge the two places that mean so much to me. I’m a full-time student finishing my robotics degree, but I spend my free time painting, welding, fabricating custom tools, and enjoying life with my kids, our dogs Koda and Hank, and a resident hoard of stray cats. I’ve also included a few special Easter eggs in the painting, so hopefully you can find them!
